Is Noise Effecting Your Sleep?

Sit down, close your eyes and envision your bedroom. Can you see it? Good. Now carefully, think about the sounds you hear while you are trying to sleep at night. Do you hear a train, cars, dogs barking, the TV? While you may not know it, “your brain continues to register and process sounds on a basic level. Noise can jostle your slumber – causing you to wake, move, shift between stages of sleep, or experience a change in heart rate and blood pressure.” These noise factors may be inhibiting your sleep, whether you are fully aware of it or not.

If you’re someone who has a tough time falling and staying asleep due to noises, you might consider trying a sound machine. Many sound machines come equipped with a plethora of sounds including fan, ocean, rain, white noise and more. According to the National Sleep Foundation, “if you have difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep, creating a constant ambient sound could help mask activity from inside and outside the house.”

Many parents utilize white noise or sound machines for their small children to help drown out the noise of the neighborhood or the rest of the family’s activities when the little ones are trying to sleep. White noise can also be helpful for the entire family. We aren’t all lucky enough to have a partner on the same sleep schedule as us, and sometimes we need something to drown out the sounds of our loved ones getting ready for work or coming to bed late at night.

While a comfortable mattress and pillow will help you sleep better, sometimes the environmental factors are just too distracting to get a restful night’s sleep. For or a quiet, noise canceling bedroom, a white-noise machine might be just what you need! Now, that you have your Yogabed and noise machine, close your eyes and envision your bedroom. Think about the sounds you hear while you’re trying to sleep. Hopefully you hear waves crashing, a soft rain or the steady hum of a fan blowing. These sounds are sure to help you drift into a deep, calm slumber.
